Environmental Outreach & Stewardship at Marine Corps Base Hawaii

Client:

Marine Corps Base Hawaii

Challenge

Marine Corps Base Hawaii (MCBH) encompasses sensitive natural ecosystems and protected species habitats, demanding proactive environmental stewardship alongside mission-critical operations. With growing public awareness, regulatory complexity, and on-base population dynamics, MCBH needed a reliable partner to sustain a robust environmental education and outreach program to ensure regulatory compliance, promote conservation, and build stronger relationships with the local community.

Our Solution

Lindahl Reed delivers full-spectrum environmental outreach services for the Environmental Compliance and Protection Division (ECPD) at MCBH. Embedded onsite, our Environmental Outreach Coordinator leads public engagement, educational campaigns, and cross-agency coordination to advance environmental awareness and conservation behavior across the installation and in the surrounding community. Key activities include:

  • Education and Briefings: Develop and deliver monthly environmental briefings for incoming Marines, base personnel, and the Provost Marshal’s Office, focusing on species protection, spill response, and environmental regulations.
  • Volunteer and Community Engagement: Organize and lead volunteer events such as “Weed Warriors,” targeting invasive species removal to protect endangered species habitats. Issue letters of recognition and maintain participation tracking.
  • Species and Habitat Protection: Install signage and lead awareness campaigns during sensitive wildlife seasons (e.g., seabird fallout, monk seal sightings), ensuring protection protocols are understood and followed by all personnel.
  • Outreach Materials and Digital Engagement: Create flyers, event signage, web content, and social media posts, amplifying environmental messaging and supporting internal/external awareness.
  • STEM and Education Events: Participate in school events and environmental banding efforts alongside university and wildlife specialists to cultivate stewardship among youth and local stakeholders.

Results & Impact

  • Strengthened Environmental Compliance Culture: Reached hundreds of Marines, dependents, civilians, and contractors monthly through briefings, volunteer events, and outreach campaigns.
  • Habitat Protection and Wildlife Support: Lead community-driven efforts that removed invasive mangroves, reduced seabird fallout risk, and safeguarded nesting sea turtles and monk seals across base beaches.
  • Enhanced Stakeholder Engagement: Worked across military units, base facilities, local schools, NGOs, and federal/state agencies to align messaging and support shared environmental goals.
  • Improved Digital Communication: Revamped the MCBH Environmental website and created engaging multimedia materials aligned with base branding and conservation messaging.

Why It Matters

This partnership supports the Marine Corps’ commitment to environmental responsibility while supporting operational readiness. Lindahl Reed’s work protects Hawaii’s unique ecological resources, ensures compliance with federal mandates, and fosters a culture of conservation across military and civilian populations.
