Hydrogen Technology Innovation

Accelerating Hydrogen Innovation Through Strategic Support and Project Leadership

Client:

U.S. Department of Energy – Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Technologies Office

Challenge

The Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Technologies Office (HFTO) leads the Department of Energy’s (DOE) efforts to enable widespread adoption of hydrogen across multiple sectors including transportation, power generation, and manufacturing. As the U.S. ramps up investment through competitive R&D and programs like the Hydrogen Shot, HFTO required scalable, expert support to manage its growing project portfolio, assess emerging technologies, and coordinate with cross-sector stakeholders to translate technical progress into national impact.

Our Solution

Lindahl Reed provides HFTO with integrated support across technical, strategic, and operational domains to empower the Office to meet its mission in a rapidly evolving hydrogen landscape. Our agile team delivers rigorous expert program and project management, analytical insight, and stakeholder coordination to advance hydrogen innovation and position DOE as a global leader in hydrogen deployment. Key activities include:

  • Program and Project Portfolio Support: Manage financial assistance R&D projects post-award, including cost, scope, and schedule performance, site visits, environmental compliance, invoice processing and closeouts to ensure project performance, recipient accountability, and delivery of high-value research results. Monitor project milestones and funding performance across National Labs while coordinating with related DOE offices and stakeholders.
  • Strategic Planning and Analysis: Support HFTO’s contributions to the Hydrogen Shot and Energy Earthshots initiatives through technical briefings, interagency coordination, and policy-aligned planning materials.
  • Technology Validation and Deployment Readiness: Evaluate the readiness, cost trends, and lifecycle impacts of hydrogen production, storage, and fueling technologies, particularly in the transportation and industrial sectors.
  • Stakeholder Engagement and Market Enablement: Develop outreach strategies and facilitate workshops to engage regional, Tribal, and other stakeholders, as well as government, academic, and industry experts.

Results & Impact

  • Strengthened Programmatic Readiness: Advanced HFTO’s programmatic readiness to support Hydrogen Shot objectives and scale up R&D coordination across DOE.
  • Delivered Cross-Sector Innovation Insight: Enabled crosscutting insights on hydrogen innovation and deployment pathways across transportation, grid integration, and industrial use.
  • Fostered Strategic Stakeholder Alignment: Increased stakeholder alignment with DOE’s hydrogen mission, including early engagement with industry and frontline communities.
  • Improved Portfolio Oversight & Transparency: Enhanced transparency and program effectiveness through improved tracking, reporting, and milestone validation across HFTO’s portfolio.

Why It Matters

Hydrogen is one of the cornerstones of our nation’s energy future and delivering on its promise requires technical excellence, programmatic agility, and stakeholder trust. Lindahl Reed’s work with the HFTO enables DOE to accelerate innovation, guide investment, and lay the foundation for a safe, reliable, and commercially viable hydrogen economy.

What our Clients Say...

“Just wanted to say congratulations to everyone and especially to the AMR team for an incredible AMR – with nearly 1,100 attendees. I am so proud of all of you and the whole office and hope you are as well. All of HFTO received numerous compliments from so many.”
