U.S. Department of Energy, Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy (EERE), Advanced Materials and Manufacturing Technologies Office

Challenge

The U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) Advanced Materials and Manufacturing Technologies Office (AMMTO) supports a globally dominant U.S. manufacturing and industrial base for a resilient energy system and secure supply chain. With a $220 million FY25 budget spanning next-generation processes, sustainable materials, and energy technology manufacturing and workforce development, AMMTO engages with Lindahl Reed’s agile, multidisciplinary support team to manage complex programs and accelerate innovation across the energy sector.

Our Solution

Lindahl Reed leads a team of scientists, engineers, and technical specialists to support AMMTO’s mission to drive and inspire innovation that transforms materials, manufacturing, and workforce and advances America’s energy economy. We deliver expert services across three pillars—Next-Generation Materials and Processes (NGMP), Secure and Sustainable Materials (S&SM), and Energy Technology Manufacturing and Workforce (ETMW)—while integrating technical assistance with strategic planning, communications, and program oversight. Key contributions include:

  • Strategic Program Planning: Author materials and frameworks to support AMMTO’s annual operating plan, R&D investment strategies, and alignment with DOE energy goals. Support the development of the Efficient Energy Scaling for Two Decades (EES2) roadmap, which will guide DOE and government-wide efforts to improve the energy efficiency of microelectronics over the coming decades.
  • Project Management: Manage over 140 financial assistance opportunities across the lifecycle, from concept to awarded projects. Oversee cost, scope, and schedule performance, compliance, and invoice processing and closeout, ensuring project performance, recipient accountability, and delivery of high-value research results.
  • Technical Analysis and Validation: Review and assess RD&D project data, performance metrics, and lab-developed innovations to guide AMMTO investment decisions. Provide subject matter expertise in areas such as critical materials, smart manufacturing, battery scale-up, and workforce education.
  • Market Analysis: Identify regional market barriers and policy levers for scaling geothermal direct-use applications, including district heating and agricultural integration. Facilitate peer reviews, lab calls, and technology assessments for Power Electronics, Harsh Environment Materials, and more.
  • Technology Commercialization: Support the expansion of the Lab-Embedded Entrepreneurship Program (LEEP), which recruits early-stage energy startups and/or emerging technologies entrepreneurs. Develop a strategic plan and expanding the LEEP multi-office advisory committee to encompass all of EERE and the Office of Science, accelerating the transition of energy innovations into the market.

Results & Impact

  • Strengthened Domestic Manufacturing and Energy Resilience: Supported advanced domestic manufacturing and a strong and resilient energy sector by providing analysis, planning, management, and direction necessary for a balanced program of research, development, demonstration, technical assistance, and workforce development.
  • Delivered 100% On-Time Performance: Maintained 100% on-time delivery for program reviews, strategic deliverables, and reporting requirements.
  • Informed DOE Strategy with Key Frameworks: Developed the AMMTO Power Electronics Strategic Framework, supported EES2 Roadmap creation, and contributed to the Circular Economy Strategic Framework.
  • Launched High-Impact Funding Initiatives: Supported the launch of major funding initiatives such as the Critical Materials Accelerator, Smart Manufacturing Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO), and Battery Manufacturing NOFO.
  • Advanced National Energy Innovation Objectives: Contributed to attainment of national energy innovation goals by guiding DOE’s investment pathways from early-stage research to pilot and demonstration phases.

Why It Matters

Lindahl Reed’s team functions as a strategic extension of AMMTO, offering cross-disciplinary expertise and institutional knowledge that drive program effectiveness and innovation. Our work empowers DOE to accelerate U.S. leadership in manufacturing, secure supply chains, and build a competitive energy workforce.
